House Job Must-Haves (And Where to Get Them).....

Starting your house job? First off—congrats, doc! 🎉 You're officially stepping into the real world of medicine. But let’s be honest, it can be chaotic, exhausting, and confusing in the beginning. So let me make it easier for you with this list of must-haves you need before Day 1—and where to get them (without breaking the bank 👀).

🩺 1. Stethoscope – Your New Bestie

Must-Have: A good quality stethoscope (don’t go for toy-level ones).

Best Picks:

  • Littmann Classic III (slightly pricey but worth it)

  • Spirit or Welch Allyn (budget-friendly options)

Where to Get:

  • Medical shops near your hospital (Pakistani ones like Lucky Medical or Bin Hashim)

  • Online: Daraz, Drazon.pk, Littmann’s official site

💼 2. Scrubs & White Coat – Dress the Part

Must-Have: At least 2–3 sets of scrubs + a decent white coat (pockets are a must!)

Where to Get:

  • Instagram pages like:

    • @Scrub_Dub (stylish and comfy)

    • @Whitecoat.pk

    • @Mediforms.pk

  • Saddar (Karachi) or local uniform stores

📋 3. Pocket Notebook & Pen (LOTS of Pens)

Must-Have: A small notepad for writing dosages, ward routines, and random info seniors throw at you 😭
Also: pens disappear. Always keep extras.

Where to Get:

  • Any stationary shop

  • Or go aesthetic and get a cute planner from @TheWritings.pk or @PaperEdge.pk

💊 4. Drug Book / App

Must-Have: A drug guide (trust me, you’re not gonna remember all the dosages).

Apps to Download:

  • Medscape

  • UpToDate

  • BNF (British National Formulary)

  • Pharmapedia (Pakistani drug info)

👟 5. Comfortable Shoes

Must-Have: You’re going to be on your feet ALL day. Please don’t suffer.

Best Picks:

  • Skechers (GOwalk series)

  • Hush Puppies or Bata Comfit

  • Anything with memory foam soles

Where to Get:

  • Brand outlets, Metro, or sales on Daraz!

🧴 6. Hand Sanitizer, Lip Balm, and Hand Cream

Must-Have: Your hands will hate you. Keep sanitizer + hand cream + lip balm in your pocket always.
Also, hand sanitizers in hospitals are either empty or stink. 😷

Where to Get:

  • Any supermarket or pharmacy

  • Try The Body Shop hand cream (smells amazing!) or Nivea for budget

🕒 7. Watch with Seconds Hand

Must-Have: You’ll be checking pulses and respiratory rates. You need a proper analog or digital watch with a seconds hand.

Where to Get:

  • Casio (classy and long-lasting)

  • Or cute budget watches from Chase Up / Miniso

🧠 8. Medical Cheat Sheet / Pocket Manual

Must-Have: Something small to refresh you on emergencies, common cases, and lab values.

Where to Get:

  • Oxford Handbook for Clinical Medicine (pocket-sized classic)

  • Print out your own cheat sheets or download PDFs from med groups

🩹 9. Scissors, Torch, Measuring Tape

Must-Have: These are your ward tools. You’ll need them more than you think.

Where to Get:

  • Medical supply shops

  • Ask any house officer—they always have a plug

🎧 10. Bluetooth Earphones (Optional But Life-Saving)

Why: You’ll need them to zone out during breaks or listen to quick podcasts while commuting.

Where to Get:

  • Daraz, local electronic shops, or any mid-range brands like Realme/Buds

Bonus Tip: Emergency Snacks

Yes, you’ll skip meals. Hide a few granola bars, juice packs, or trail mix in your bag.
